Video Description
Mysteries from the Wild West
We investigate four stories from the American West. Did this biography of legendary frontiersman Kit Carson once belong to members of his family? Then, a rodeo saddle tells the story of movie stuntman Yakima Canutt. Discover the meaning behind an inscription on sheet music of the popular western song Tumbling Tumbleweeds? Did a pivotal character in the Modoc Indian wars weave this basket?

- Pat Kruis

Panelist
Pat Kruis came to Portland in 1983 to work as a reporter for KGW-TV, the NBC affiliate in town. The job gave her a front-row seat and behind-the-scenes access to many of the events and people that shaped Oregon. For the past five years, Pat has shined the spotlight on OPB’s national productions like Time Team America and History Detectives. Whenever possible, Pat produces stories for Arts & Life, Oregon Field Guide and Oregon Art Beat.
- Tukufu Zuberi

Panelist
America has a long history of social upheaval and cultural mood swings. These shifts leave clear signs of their passing. The trick is knowing how to read the signs, and interpret their meaning. Tukufu is an authority on the subject. Under his scrutiny, even subtle signs can yield vital evidence about the events at a mystery's core. He also provides the team with a context for their work, relating descriptive accounts of living conditions in that particular place, at that particular time. Being aware of the social issues, pressures, and problems of the day can sometimes help the team determine the triggers of a past event, and the motives of the people involved.
- Wes Cowan

Panelist
A familiar face on the popular PBS series Antiques Roadshow, C. Wesley Cowan is your man when you want to investigate objects from America's past. His credentials include a Ph.D. in Anthropology, and ownership of an auction company that specializes in historical Americana. The team looks to Wes for informed opinions on almost any item from our national past, from furniture to folk art, political ephemera, and rare old prints. And he never, ever stops being curious.
