Through its roster of films produced during this year's Social Justice themed youth filmmaking programs, the Fest will spark conversations on pressing topics impacting our communities.

Race Explained

A little girl who gets bullied by a racist because of her hair and learns how to deal with it and speak out.

Blinded

After a few interactions with racism, a girl reflects on her experiences and then takes them head on. This story is meant to show how racism can be found in our everyday lives and you don’t always realize that till it happens to you. It’s filled with stereotypes, microaggressions, and internalized racism, all of which are real issues that occur all the time. -Aliyah

We are Oʻahu

A message of problems on the island to bring awareness and a better understanding and a perspective. This short film was produced during the Environmental Justice Reel Camp organized by Hawai‘i Women in Filmmaking in collaboration with Wisdom Circles of Oceania and Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi.

Future: Take One

A funny and serious look at the world's fate. Our story is a mixture of comedy and the seriousness of the world's fate. We wanted to address the frightening effects of Climate Change. Our story shows that anyone can fight Climate Change no matter who or what position they are in! Our world CAN become better if we unite as one and work together! This short film was produced during the Environmental Justice Reel Camp organized by Hawai‘i Women in Filmmaking in collaboration with Wisdom Circles of Oceania and Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi.

The Power of Saving Water

How people waste water in their daily lives and how each small action can make a difference. We wanted to share how water is a vital limited resource and should not be wasted. This short film was produced during the Environmental Justice Reel Camp organized by Hawai‘i Women in Filmmaking in collaboration with Wisdom Circles of Oceania and Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi.

For Your Consideration

This story follows two teenage girls who are being negatively affected by the patriarchy in their everyday life. After being sexually harassed, they struggle to cope with the societal norm of blaming the victim, and internalizing that blame.

The Talk

Harper finds her sex-ed class lacking and uninformative. When she and her friend hear about an inclusive sex-ed workshop, Harper learns about what makes a space safe for everybody.

2 Pigs In A Blanket

Our film is about ADHD and Autism stereotypes. In our film we hope to educate you on wrongful stereotyping. In our film we hope to educate you on wrongful stereotyping. And show you what a real day in a life is for an ADHD and Autism person. Many with ADHD and Autism are always seen as the stereotypes created by those who don't have these neurological disorders. Those with these disorders are seen differently then they are and we want to educate people to help them know the true side to these disorders.

The Artist's Subject.mov

An artist attempts to paint a natural landscape when the view suddenly gets interrupted. The artist encounters a perspective through this new interruption and and journeys into self-reflection and a new perspective.

Dreamscape

Two girls, Penelope and Anna, realize through a repetitive dreamscape how healthily they grow out of a friendship. This short film was produced during the 2022 Fall Reel Camp for Girls organized by Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking.

This is a story about Sydney, a teenage high school girl, who is oppressed by the biased dress codes of her school. One day she takes a stand against the unfair dress code and inspires others around her. This short film was produced during the 2022 Fall Reel Camp for Girls organized by Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking.

A girl is used to being alone. However, she doesn't mind it at all. In fact, she actually prefers it.

    Vera Zambonelli

    For over 10 years, Vera has been advocating for gender justice in filmmaking through an intersectional lens. Vera founded Hawaiʻi Women in Filmmaking in 2011 to provide a space for wāhine filmmakers to connect, collaborate, and support each other. In 2017, Vera launched the production of Reel Wāhine of Hawai‘i, a short doc film series that redresses gender inequity in the film industry by documenting the real-life stories of Hawai‘i women filmmakers.
