Conversations for Change:
Awakening: HBCU reckoning and revival
Join Maryland Public Television’s national conversation focusing on a contemporary view of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) through the eyes of the people who power them. Panelists discuss HBCUs as an important, vibrant, and active part of the Black American experience in politics, economics, culture, and industry.
We invite you to watch, listen, and engage in a conversation with panelists from across the nation. This screening is online, so you can watch and participate from wherever you are.
This special event is presented during HBCU Week, part of MPT's “Standing Against Racism: Fostering Unity Through Dialogue” initiative.
About the conversation:
Co-hosts Jarrett Carter, editor, HBCUDigest.com and graduate of Morgan State University, and Dr. Karsonya "Kaye" Wise Whitehead, host of "Today With Dr. Kaye" on WEAA and founder of the Karson Institute for Race, Peace and Social Justice, and associate professor at Loyola University Maryland, will guide us through a powerful conversation.
During this Conversation for Change event, we will watch segments from HBCU programs, hear from panelists around the country, and answer questions from the audience in real time.
The discussion will include:
-- How the history of HBCU campus activism is setting the stage for today's students
-- How HBCU communities are advancing issues such as voting rights, healthcare access, police reform, and secondary education improvement
-- How HBCUs affirm students in their identity while developing them as leaders in times of racial and social tension
-- How HBCU communities seized moments to research and develop legislation supporting Black colleges
-- How the country can better support HBCUs
-- and more!
