When mourners and protesters took to the streets after an unarmed Black teenager was shot by police in Ferguson, many declared Missouri the home of a "new civil rights movement." Join an interactive screening on OVEE to watch news clips from Ferguson alongside film clips from the PBS documentary Freedom Summer and discuss how how far we've come in the march towards equality. Chat live with teen journalists from The Nine Network in St. Louis and the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs who are covering the issues on the ground in Missouri and exchange strategies with community leaders working for justice across the country.

    Mike Pagano

    Mike Pagano is an artist and educator based in Saint Louis City; focusing on video and music production, multi-media art, and performance. He has worked with many of the leading arts institutions in the Saint Louis area, including COCA, Craft Alliance, the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum. Currently Mike is a digital media specialist, at the Nine Network of Public Media. Through the Nine Center for Public Engagement, Mike leads the Nine LAB Digital Storytelling program, which offers training to community members and organizations to develop 21st century communication skills and feel empowered to tell and share their stories of impact.

    Panelist

    Darian Wigfall has been an activist since attending Hampton University and joining the campus NAACP chapter in the year 2000. Returning to his home state of Missouri at the University of Missouri in Columbia (2000) where he served as president of the Student Foundation before graduating with a degree in Biology in 2006. While working as a scientist at Washington University in St. Louis medical school, he once again found his passion for civic engagement, volunteering as a facilitator with the Diversity Awareness Partnership as well as UrbanFUTURE Inspire mentors in 2007 and 2008. Since then, he has joined the Universal African People's Organization as a member and the Organization for Black Struggle as a supporter. In addition, he has served on the young professionals board for Safe Connections, a nonprofit providing resources to survivors of sexual assault and relationship violence, and continues to volunteer with them to this day. His involvement in the 2008 campaign for Barack Obama as a canvasser and phone bank volunteer led to his belief in local politics, leading him to work on the Tishaura Jones campaign for City Treasurer and the Lewis Reed campaign for mayor registering voters and gauging support in North city. Most recently, his involvement in the indie record label FarFetched has led him to join the artist social justice collective #WeThePeople and the Don’t Shoot coalition following the shooting death of Michael Brown.

She is Founder, Strategist and Storyteller of Alchemy 7 Creative, LLC located in St. Louis, MO, and member of the St. Louis based, Screwed Arts Collective.

    Damon Davis

    Damon Davis is an interdisciplinary artist that works and resides in St. Louis, MO. Davis sporadically, yet seamlessly, weaves between different creative platforms to explore a wide range of allegories and parables that come from his interaction with the world around him. Davis graduated from St. Louis University with a B.A. in Communication Technology with an emphasis on Visual Communication. He is a member of experimental hip hop outfit, SNS (Scripts N Screwz). In which, he is both producer and a vocalist. He is also co-founder of art collective Civil Ape. Civil Ape is the brain-child of Davis and friend and long time collaborator Lenard Blair. Their goal with the collective is to constantly strive to create compelling work that fascinates and inspires their audience using multimedia as the catalyst. In 2012, Damon started FarFetched. Farfetched is an independent music and art imprint based out of St. Louis, MO. We specialize in creating thought provoking, honest, and innovative content for all. In 2013, Davis received an Emmy for the short documentary created by production house Think Antidote, 'A Story To Tell' in which Davis' life and work was the subject.
