A native of Berkeley, California, Andrea holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the City University of New York Graduate Center. She has a joint appointment in Florida International University’s Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies and the African & African Diaspora Studies Program. Her research interests include black and diasporic subjectivity, race and representation, intra-Caribbean migration, and the African Diaspora in Latin America. She has published several journal articles on these themes in addition to her book ”Rescuing Our Roots: The Anglo-Caribbean African Diaspora in Contemporary Cuba” (University Press of Florida 2015).

Calibe Thompson is the interim Executive Director at Island SPACE, a nonprofit organization that promotes excellence in arts and culture projects representing the Caribbean in South Florida and the extended diaspora. She is also the Creative Director and lead seeker of perfection at media and creative agency, Island Syndicate Inc. She is an outgoing Jamaican-American entrepreneur with titles including TV producer, publisher, director, host, best-selling author, columnist and public speaker. In 2015 Thompson became the first Jamaican Executive Producer to secure series placement on US national public television. Her flagship show “Taste the Islands” was the first Caribbean culinary series that the network giants PBS and Create TV had broadcast nationally. Her programs have aired in 46 American states, over 20 Caribbean countries, Canada, the United Kingdom and Brunei.
