    Mariano Avila

    Panelist

    Avila was born in Mexico City, Mexico. His life and work have taken him from refugee camps in Palestine to Guatemalan communities built atop garbage dumps. He has met dignitaries and celebrities from around the world. Avila is a graduate of Calvin University in Michigan, has an MFA in creative writing from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina and holds certificates from Harvard Kennedy School, the Poynter Institute and the National Equity Project.

    Executive Director ExFabula, Milwaukee Megan McGee is the Executive Director of Ex Fabula, a nonprofit that connects Milwaukee through real stories. She has degrees in Theatre and Spanish, a background in Lean Process Improvement, and a passion for social justice. Under her leadership, Ex Fabula has received awards including a 2020 MANDI for their Deaf Storytelling work and a 2021 Unity Award from Milwaukee Magazine.

    Dr. Sumana Chattopadhyay

    Panelist

    Sumana Chattopadhyay (PhD, University of Missouri-Columbia) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Digital Media and Performing Arts housed in the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University. She joined Marquette during the Fall of ’06. Her research interests focus on public opinion, political campaigns and cross-cultural media coverage of environmental and migration crises and pandemics. She has published multiple studies on U.S. elections and environmental disasters and migration crises. Dr. Chattopadhyay teaches classes on political campaigns, media and politics, social campaigns, media management, viewing television through a critical lens, television as a global industry and international communication, media theory and research methods.
